Stari Grad is a beautiful place. The villa overlooks the harbour. There is constant activity on and around the water. A pedestrianised quayside extends right around the harbour, making for delightful strolling and cycling from the house.
It is the perfect place for a Croatia family holiday. The beaches are safe for swimming and are a pleasant and easy walk away from the house. The nearest, about five minutes stroll from the villa, is excellent for kids.
Stari Grad has a good selection of bars and restaurants, which are easy to walk to from the villa. Probably the greatest fun is simply sitting outside with a coffee, a drink or an ice cream and watching life go by – people enjoying the sun, fisherman going to and fro on their boats and the mooring of beautiful yachts.
Stari Grad was founded by the ancient Greeks in 285/4 BC. They called it Pharos. It is reckoned to be one of the oldest settlements in the Adriatic and has sites protected by UNESCO. It has a beautiful stone built old town, which the villa overlooks. Stari Grad is surrounded by lush forest and is cooled by gentle summer breezes.
It is no coincidence that Hvar is one of the best known Islands in Croatia. It is noted for its lush vegetation, pine woods, olive trees and various aromatic plants that perfume the crystal-clear unpolluted air. There are more than 47 different types of quality wines produced on the Island.
The water is crystal clear and beautiful for swimming in. If you want to explore further from the villa than Stari Grad, it's easy to hire cycles, boats, cars and scooters.
The capital, Hvar Town, is only 15 minutes away from the villa. It is the St Tropez of Croatia, a port of call for superyachts and celebrities. A short boat trip from there lies the magical bay of Palmižana. In the other direction is the island of Brač. It is rich in history and culture with seven century old walls and a wide range of museums and art galleries.
To get to Stari Grad, you arrive and leave from Split, a World Heritage City with a unique and very special old town built in the shell of the palace of the Roman Emperor Diocletian.
You can also easily visit Dubrovnik to the south, the famed “Pearl of the Adriatic” or Trogir, to the north, another “pearl” located a few miles from Split Airport.
