Exploring the Island

Hvar Town, the capital of the island, is about 15 minutes by car or 30 minutes by bus away. It is the St Tropez of Croatia, its quayside normally featuring an array of super yachts. It has a range of attractions, a good market, many places to eat and drink. Taxi boats go from there to the idyllic bay of Palmižana.

Other villages to visit are Jelsa and Vrboska, ten minutes drive and on the water, with their own piazzas, culture and special ambience.

Go up into the hills to beautiful Pitve, or Dol, and drive through a historic one kilometre hand hewn stone tunnel to the other side of the Island and visit Zavala, Ivan Dolac or Sveti Nedjla, all with their own spirit and charm.

There’s Rudine, behind Stari Grad…or you can drive the old hill route through quaint villages to reach Hvar and come back and visit beach-side Milna…

Hvar is a long narrow island with a central spine. The road runs about 30 kilometres to Sucuraj at its far end, with beautiful views over the Hvarski Kanal to the neighbouring island of Brac. At Sucuraj you can take the ferry to the mainland.
